Today we went on an expedition. This was one which probably equalled the achievement of Sherpa Tensing managing the logistics of that other, earlier fairly preparation-heavy trip. It may not sound too difficult for those who have never done the whole round-Costa Dorada-with-a-wheelchair thing. But believe me it took all our ingenuity to make this a possible trip.
Where did we go? Well – we went down the coast to Cambrils (to a Spanish market – where else!!!) On the public bus. Luckily this town (indeed, coast) seems to be fairly well adapted for wheelchairs, in that there´re ramps at every zebra crossing and every building.
But wheelchairs are much heavier than they look. And then when you put a person into it, it becomes something of a training feat. For which you need to be already fit.
Anyway. I pushed this wheelchair for what appeared like miles before we reached the bus stop. Between the three of us, we (just about) managed to get the thing and it´s encumbent onto the bus. Getting off we praised the good lord that there was a couple on the bus, getting out at our stop, who works with those using wheelchairs and more or less did the job for us.
Then we pushed the chair and occupant up and down the market and round the town before finally struggling to get them both back on the bus for the homeward journey.
This evening, after dinner, naturally the football match took precedence (that is – for the folks).
After which was the dancing. For which I was too whacked to barely watch. But – wheelchair man – he who had really had very little exercise today – well, he was looking for a partner for the waltz!!!
